Who was Vincent Van Gogh?

A Dutch impressionist who made around 2100 paintings  during his lifetime. He is known for one of his famous paintings called ‘The Starry Night’. It was painted by him when he was in an asylum in France. This painting is currently housed in the Museum of Modern Art, New York. All his oil paintings are displayed at Amsterdam Museum.

The movie, ‘Loving Vincent’ based on the life of Vincent Van Gogh was screened for viewing. The movie is made by over 100 artists, entirely depicted in oil paintings. It was made after one year of his death, when a young man tries to find out the reason for Vincent’s death.

The paintings in the movie focus on distinguishing the characters and the objects in the scenes by the use of different strokes which are asymmetrical in nature. The strokes are used to show movement in characters with the help of dark and light areas.

Inspired by this movie technique, ‘Charcoal Paintings’ can be made in a similar way. By establishing the right amount of pressure on the charcoal sticks, a good painting can be created. The sticks can be used to create strokes and lines of varied lengths and thicknesses.
