‘Parts of a Whole’ refers to the breaking down of bigger aspects into smaller elements until a point where they reach the most basic attribute. Here, it refers to the breaking down of a design stream into categories first and then into elements which come under those categories.
Every design stream works in a different way. It was important to identify the various categories that existed in a particular course and how it could be further divided. A discussion in class about ‘branding’ and ‘business’ helped us in understanding the process in a better way. The task was to do the same for our own design streams.
I chose to work on ‘ Fashion Communication & Styling’. This is the course I want to take up and applying this process would give me a better idea of the same. And so, I started by dividing the main course into five categories, namely: Branding, Visual Communication, Photography, Space Design and Fashion Journalism. Further, I tried placing the elements accordingly in to various categories based on how they linked with each other and what they led to.
This was the mind mapping structure:

This process helped me in separating the various categories and gave a clearer picture of the multiple aspects which existed within the field. It was important to understand that all the courses in a way or so, were connected to each other and therefore it was important to locate that point where all of it got connected. It also helped us in the realizing the possibilities each category would have. In this way, the mind maps were created and explored by us.
