Integrative Studio Sem 2: Week 5

5th Feb, 2020: Aakash Das

The sketches made by us were developed in this class. Since the three sketches made by us were based on the same city, they had to be related to each other in a way or so. So each of them would have similar aspects in them which would make it easier for us to relate them to the city and at the same time depict the city in a precise manner.

The city chosen by me is called THE UNBOUNDED CITY.

The city is explained as this:

The first sketch depicts the view of the city extending to the skies showing how it is made up of really tall structures which appear to be touching the sky. The flowing lines create a connection between the buildings and the sky, giving it an association. The vertical lines could also be a depiction of rain. This could also show the hopes stretching to an infinite limit showing that the city is ‘limitless’.

The second one is a depiction of the city which stands still on the cliffs. A wave in the centre separates the two cliffs and also highlights the presence of water from the narration. It kind of builds a development of the first sketch in a way. The flowing lines created in this sketch, depicts the ‘spread out structure’ of the city how there is no definition as such. The height factor is again applied to this sketch.

The next one is based on how is how it is not only the city that is far stretched but also the possibilities and expectations of the people who visit this city. It is vast and expands to a limit which cannot be defined. In spite of this, there is a connection between the people and the city and that is shown through the flowing lines of on the sides. Again, it consists of some elements that connect all the three sketches.

Sketching the city out helped us in imagining the city in a better way. It helped us in transforming our words into visualizations and in turn the actual look or the effect created by it. Thus, it makes it more impactful and attractive and gives a much better understanding of the city.
