Time: Week 10

17th March, 2020: Elizabeth Matthew

This lecture was all about working as a group in order to analyze five movies. The movies which we got belonged to a particular era making it very specific to that time period. Therefore, it was important to understand the background of the movie before watching it.

The era that my group got was from 1981 to 1995. On the list of the five movies given to us, we decided to watch one movie per person. The movie that i watched is called ‘ Jaane Bhi Do Yaaro’.

Jaane Bhi Do Yaaro is set in 1983 and is based in Mumbai. It highlights the illegalities which existed in the society, especially corruption. The movie revolves around two photographers who open a photo studio in order to earn a living, but eventually they get employed by a newspaper publication which exposes the illegalities and scandals which prevail among the rich classes. While trying to capture such incidents for the newspaper, they accidentally capture a murder and get involved in the scandal.

A large part of the movie is based on how the rich classes exploit their power in order to overshadow the poor classes. And in spite of all the scandals which they do, they easily get away with it and it is the poor people who have to face the consequences. This movie cleverly brings out the objective in a humorous yet realistic kind of way.

Set in those days, the movie also reflects the thoughts and behaviour of the people back then. And how they used to handle certain situations or react in a certain way.

A discussion based on all the five movies, therefore helped us in listing down identical themes from all the movies. The one thing which made it easier was the fact that all of them depicted similar issues but in very different ways. The next part here was to create a mind maps for our own movies and putting the gist of it together.

This is the mind map created by me:

The mind map helped in identifying the main elements which contributed to the movie and summarized it well. It also gave me a deeper understanding of the flow of the movie and the various ways in which the message was conveyed.
