Communication Design: Week 1

15th Jan, 2020: Siddharth Ganguly

Communication basically refers to the process of transferring information. Communication design involves the depiction of information through visuals that focus on presenting the main content.

Communication can be done with the help of five main senses of Sight, Smell, Touch, Taste and Sound. When all these senses are involved in communicating a certain product, they activate the brain to respond to it. It tends to attract us to the product automatically.

A product is said to have a good communication design when it makes use of all the five senses to convey information. It makes the product more appealing and at the same time also increases its usability by enhancing its qualities.

The best example of Good Communication is ‘ Starbucks Coffee’. This is because it makes use of all the five senses to attract customers. Sight is included in the logo, Smell is in the coffee beans, Touch in holding it, Taste is in drinking it and finally sound is included in the making of coffee.

A broad discussion on this topic in class helped us in understanding it better.

This helped us in coming up with two examples of good and bad communication design.

The product that I chose to show good communication is ‘Cadbury’. I feel that Cadbury has evolved a lot over the years in terms of packaging, product quality, advertisements and even taglines. It touches all the five senses of perception and proves to have a very good communication. It also consists of a very attractive packaging which makes it recognizable from a distance itself.

I represented this by drawing a Cadbury Chocolate and using each block of chocolate to show one product of Cadbury. I also tried to replicate the typeface used in the original product.

For bad communication, I chose the Pepsi Ad which released in 2017, starring Kendall Jenner. The ad was intended to promote unity but instead achieved a lot of criticism and somehow the campaign went in the opposite direction. Although the ad received the highest number of views in just two days, it was not appreciated by anyone. People were completely discontented with the video and therefore it had to be removed. It is an example of bad communication since Pepsi did not really convey the purpose of the ad properly and that led to a lot of miscommunication and misunderstandings.

I tried to represent it using the Pepsi bottle with the entire purpose of the ad written on it.

This assignment helped us to differentiate between the two types of ads and communication and the mistakes that should be avoided.
