Communication Design: Week 2

Typography is art of displaying text in such a way that it is appealing and conveys the thought behind the use of it. Typography consists of two elements: Font and Typeface.

A font is what we use and a typeface is what we see.

Font is the combination of typeface, style and size.

The basic fonts include: Serif, Sans Serif, Display and Script. Each of these has their own special characteristics that make them distinct from each other. Also, there are some features which make them easily recognizable.

SERIF is sleek and consists of leg embellishments. It is a classic font and is used by luxury brands. SLAB SERIF is comparatively bold and has a masculine edge. SANS SERIF on the other hand, consists of no arm or leg extensions and is contemporary and clean.

DISPLAY is decorative and can be used for a specific purpose. The only drawback of this font is that it can’t be used widely in a paragraph and therefore has limited use. Script is cursive and handwritten and adds a personal touch.

A wide discussion on the different fonts and typefaces and their application in the various brands helped us in understanding it in a much better way and gave us the proper purpose behind using them.

A discussion on the different brand characters also gave us an insight on the application of fonts.

The next part was to create our own Fonts using any medium available to us. It could be physical or digital. I chose illustrator to create my font using tools like blend tool and extrude and bevel.

I tried to represent the meaning of the word in the text itself.
