Integrative Seminar Sem 2: Week 4

31st Jan, 2020: Meenal Sutaria

‘Invisible cities’ is a book which describes the uniqueness of each city in a way that is very imaginary but at the same time can be related to the real world because of the use of metaphors. The most surprising element of the story is the fact that it is actually based on just one city: VENICE. While the reader assumes each city to be different, the book describes the same city in various ways.

Zora is one of the cities that the author has described to have an ‘unusual image’ in the visitor’s recollections. He has also highlighted the different features of this city and how all of them are distinct from each other. At the end, he also mentions that the city is no longer remembered as it has disappeared and everyone has forgotten it.

The discussion about the various cities gave us a better idea of the purpose behind describing the cities in a particular way. Every description is different from the other in a way or so and therefore makes the city unique in its own way.

The understanding of design aspects of each city was also developed which helped us in analyzing the possibilities in every case and how each city could be made better.

We also had to come up with six imaginary cities of our own which could either be based on one city or could be completely unreal. While writing them down, it was necessary for us to keep in mind the book, ‘Invisible Cities’. Therefore, these cities could be very fictitious as well.
