Sustainable Systems: Week 2

16th Jan, 2020: Sahiba Madan

Sustainability is the proper and responsible use of resources available to us so that there is minimum wastage and maximum productivity. This class was all about coming up with a concept for three sustainable and three unsustainable things from our routine, and compiling them together.

The chart made by me, consists of illustrations explained with the help of some text. I made three illustrations for sustainable things from my routine which include: Substitution of plastic bags with cloth bags, Conservation of water and Preventing the wastage of food. I try to follow these three as much as I can in my day to day routine and that is the reason I mentioned them under sustainable measures.

Sustainable measures

Some of the unsustainable measures from my routine include, Not turning of devices at night, Not using stairs instead of elevators and not switching off lights after leaving a room. These are some of the areas that I am trying to improve in, and therefore I mentioned them under unsustainable measures.

Unsustainable measures

This project helped us in exploring the practices that we need to continue to follow and areas we need to improve in. So it also helps us in making better decisions pertaining to sustainability.

The later half of the class included a discussion on the three “R’s”. Reuse, Recycle and Renew. Replace is also a part of this cycle. All of these are different from each other and work in different ways. This is why sometimes it becomes necessary to replace a process with another to save time or any such reason. Also one of the reasons might be that all products cannot undergo all the processes and therefore it is important to understand the working of each of them and then decide the most suitable process for the product.
