Integrative Studio: Week 12

27th March, 2020: Akash Das

Iteration refers to the process of making something again and again by adding little changes to it. These changes can change the existing product in such a manner that it can be a new version of it as well. The iterations made by us were based on the part of the element chosen by us. These iterations were five different versions of the same part.

I chose to make these iterations on ‘Layouts’ under Editorial Design for Fashion Communication. The iterations depicted the text and image placement for five different layouts. I chose various fashion editorials as a reference for making these iterations. Some of them are Vogue, Harper’s Bazaar, Vanity Fair, i-D and Dazed.

Using these magazines as references, I made my five iterations:

While making these, I made a few changes in the way the images and text was placed in the actual publication. I also added a light background to it by inserting lines around the pictures which would highlight it even more. I tried to maintain the essence of the magazine by making a few changes which would enhance it.

A short discussion about it gave me a better understanding about the development of the layout. I also made some small thumbnails for the further progress of the layouts into an actual magazine by combining them as one.

These iterations gave me a better insight into the basic structure and pattern which is followed by these magazines. I also got to know how each of them differed and what made them unique in nature. For example, I understood that Vogue followed a very elegant structure by keeping majority of the layout in white and using a sleek font which minimum but large images. On the other hand, Harper’s Bazaar focused on the details of the images and even considered highlighting the aspects of the image separately. Therefore, keeping these aspects in mind, I tried to make the iterations for the different types of layouts.
